I'm currently typing on a macbook pro from 2009, before that I had a g4 powerbook. While throughout all that time I've dealt with windows, I much prefer MacOS. I've never built a computer, however I am an engineer and feel confident I'll be able to handle it.
I'm debating building a desktop hackintosh because I'd like to be able to run some FEA and solid modeling software, as well as starcitizen, whenever that comes out. I would also like to push a large display, and possibly use it as an entertainment system as well.
Looking at apples current line up, I just don't see a decent option for me to be able to do those things very effectively. I'm stuck between the Imac an the pro with the cost of the pro being just a bit ridiculous for the level of performance for my intended applications. I could just wait until the iMac specs come up to acceptable levels, but I have started to consider this hackintosh route. I would be willing to spend ~$2k to do this right, but my concern is that I will end up giving up too much "seamless functionality" going with a hackintosh. Half of the reason I prefer MacOS is that it tends to work fairly seamlessly.
My last alternative would be to just build a solid windows desktop, and then also get a cheaper new/used macbook.
tl:dr Can you build a fully functional, stable, no bullshit hackintosh for $2k that will play starcitizen.
