I've just bought a PowerMac G5 for a case mod, and hopefully hackintosh PC build. It's the PowermacG59,1 model with single core @1.8Ghz, but that doesn't matter because I'll be getting rid of all that.

Here are my plans so far after doing research and planning this on and off for over a year.

  • Mount the motherboard using the existing pins(?) from the G5 PowerMac. Hopefully this will make more sense once I get the Mac.

  • Use extension (Male to Female) USB cables and audio cables for the back panel. This will require the motherboard to be mounted slightly away from the back panel, and the cords to be superglued into the holes on the back panel. This is to minimise changes to the existing case. The USB ports would be usable for any future mobo upgrades simply by plugging in the new motherboard to the glued in cables. The cables are $1 each from eBay. EDIT: I might actually just make a hole - what is the best way to do this? I don't have a dremel, but I do have a cordless drill and a drill bit set.

  • Remove existing PSU and replace with 480W Seasonic PSU that I have already. Insert cord through the existing hole until I buy an extension power cord and glue it in like I did with the USB ports.

  • Leave existing fans where possible.

  • Use a SATA DVD drive and drill a hole for the eject button. May mount an actual button later.

  • Front panel ports and power button will have to use a modded cable using jumper/USB/firewire cables from my PC case and the existing plug from the G5 case.

How does all that sound? Have I missed anything?

Here are the final specs I'll be expecting. CPU: Intel Core2Quad 2.6Ghz (Q8400) HDD: 1TB + 300GB PSU: Seasonic 480W DVD: SATA DVD burner GPU: AMD Radeon HD 4350 RAM: DDR3 1333Mhz 1x2GB (may will be upgraded later)

Also, do you have any ideas for the parts I will take out of the G5 when I gut it?

EDIT: Just to let you know that the motherboard seems smaller than a regular ATX board, maybe a micro or mini ATX, so should fit ok with the power supply without any modifications to the overhead locker things.

If anyone wants to know, the motherboard is from a Acer x5810.
