I put together a Z97 machine for gaming and work, and I've installed OS X 10.9.3 Mavericks on it. Here's a rough log. I'd appreciate advice on fixing the things which aren't working, especially video and sound. Hardware:
- GA-H97N-Wifi
- Core i7 4790
- EVGA GTX 770 with ACX cooler (this is whiny under load, BTW)
- Samsung SSD 840 Evo 120 GB system drive on SATA1 (Windows on SATA0)
- 1080p DVI monitor
- 16 GiB DDR3-1600 RAM
I had some trouble with the initial install, partly because I installed 10.9.2 by mistake and had to upgrade, and partly because of BIOS. The key to installing was to use conservative BIOS settings, as recommended by http://www.tonymacx86.com/desktop-compatibility/108824-gigabyte-ga-z87-hd3-recommended-bios-settings-flags.html:
- VT-d off probably required
- IGPU off definitely required; without this it only comes up in safe mode
I set some other ones which I haven't experimented with:
- XHCI = Smart auto
- XHCI Hand-off enabled
- EHCI Hand-off enabled
- XMP 1, 1600 MHz.
- NVidia web drivers.
My MultiBeast configuration:
- Realtek ALC892 without DSDT, HDAEnabler (doesn't work)
- 3rd party SATA
- Trim Enabler for 10.9.x
- FakeSMC v6.0.1123
- USB 3.0 Universal
- Chimera 2.2.1
- Atheros L1c Ethernet
- AppleIntel E1000e
- AppleRTC Patch for CMOS Reset
- Generate CPU States
- GraphicsEnabler=Yes
- Hibernate Mode -Desktop
- IGPEnabler = No
- Use KernelCache
- 1080p display mode
- Mac Pro 3,1
Working:
- GUI comes up fine and works normally and smoothly
- Apps I've tried, except as noted
- Boot is fast-ish; shutdown could be faster but isn't terrible
- Sleep and wake
- Intel power widget; frequency scaling; hyperthreading
- Stability for at least several hours under heavy CPU load, across sleep and wake (running some math to break it in)
- Unigine Heaven
- DVI-I port of graphics card
- One of the two Ethernet ports (the one closer to the graphics card; I think it's the Intel one)
- USB
- Flash which doesn't try to play video
- f.lux, Alfred, Time Machine
Not working:
- Video playback from QuickTime, Flash or HTML5
- Sound it won't even try to play sounds in iTunes
- Second ethernet port
- DVI-D port of graphics card (at least, I can't switch between them while running)
- Bluetooth
- WiFi
- Sometimes the boot menu doesn't show the Windows partition
- Sleep mode results in "check signal" instead of blank screen
- Integrated GPU
- The clock fights the Windows clock (one stores in UTC or something?)
Not tested:
- Quick boot
- Gaming on OS X (I'm using Windows for that right now)
- System updates
- I/O-heavy workloads
- HDMI and displayPort
When I try to play sound or video, Console shows SoundAssertion in {AppleHDAController, AppleHDAEngine, IOHDAStream}. So it might be that this is blocking both. Any recommendations? Do I need DSDT for this, or do I need to wait until there's a fix for this particular motherboard's sound? Should I try a cheap USB DAC?
Thanks for reading!
