Just got off the phone with them and my iMessage is now working fine. When they ask for the serial number, just tell them you had to install OS X on your PC to test something on more powerful hardware or something along those lines, then they will be able to go through the verification process (basically just giving them the 12 digit number, your Apple ID and a Temporary Support Pin from the Apple ID page) and you will have working iMesssage.
