Hello /r/hackintosh! I am planning a gaming build that I will hopefully start collecting parts for after Christmas. I've been considering a dual boot with Windows and OSX for a long time now, but now I need to consider what graphics card to put in my case. Originally I was planning on Maxwell with the assumption that the new iMacs would use the GTX970 or 980M thus allowing me to use a full 970 or 980. With the inclusion of the R9-295M in the iMac this raises a very interesting conundrum for me.
Now, the card I intended to buy, the GTX 970 isn't driver supported and I wager that it won't be supported until the 15inch MBP is updated. Perhaps Apple will use AMD cards but I seriously doubt they would given the power efficiency of the Maxwell design. However, I'm not opposed to using a desktop R9 290 in my build if it ensures fairly good driver compatibility with OSX.
Since I plan to create a mini ITX build, I preferred the power efficiency and thus lower cooling needs of a GTX970, but I can change the cooling around to ensure that I could cool even an aftermarket R9290.
Has anybody had experience trying to get the Hawaii GPUs going in a hackintosh build and similarly has Maxwell provided large difficulty for you guys? I suppose I could just go with a Kepler card on clearance, but I really wanted to have the new stuff. Any and all help is appreciated.
