Hi all,
First time posting on reddit - hope I'm doing this right :O
I'm a relatively experienced Hackintosh builder; right now I have a SB-based build that has been pretty reliable. Needing some more horsepower, though, and so here's where I am at.
I'm in discussion with the fellow over at http://rampagedev.wordpress.com/ regarding this build, and will likely get his help as well to make sure this system works, but I wanted as much community input and advice as I can get before I build a pretty expensive system. I picked the Asus X99-Deluxe as he recommended that as most stable.
I've marked the hardware I already own, as I'd like to continue using that hardware if at all possible.
My biggest unknown is whether my SATA/USB3.0 needs will be satisfied. I need 2-4 USB3.0, I need some internal hotswap SATA ports, and I need a couple external eSATA as well. I'm not sure if the motherboard's ports will work, and I only have one available and not-blocked-by-graphics-cards PCIe slot available.
Needs:
- working 2x hotswap eSATA for external drives, my redmag reader, etc.
- working 2x internal hotswap SATA. I need this for my internal hot-swap drive bays.
- working USB 3.0, either built-in, or PCIe card
- working built-in Ethernet
- working thunderbolt (I understand hotswap will not work; that's fine)
- working iMessage/Facetime (currently using Clover to support it on my machine & have access to a 5,1 and 6,1 serial if needed)
Don't care about:
- built-in audio working; have external audio interface
- built-in wifi working; wifi not needed
- built-in bluetooth working; I have a working USB adapter
- CPU power management
First, the case, cooling, & power:
- Fractal Design Define R2 XL Black E-ATX case
- Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler
- 3x Noctua NF-A14 PWM 140mm case cooling
- [already own] EVGA Supernova 1300G2 1300W Power Supply
Next, drives/storage. I backup my entire system via Time Machine to a networked Qnap NAS.
- [already own; edit drives] 3x WD Black 4TB in software RAID-0
- [system] ADATA SX900 2.5" 256GB SSD SATA 3 Sandforce
- [already own; user directory] 1TB WD something-or-ther
- [already own] 2x Wiebetech RTX110-INT 5.25" Internal 3.5" hot-swap drive bays. These guys are the reason I'd like the internal SATA ports to be hot-swappable if possible. I don't mind if the other drives show as "external" either.
the guts:
- ASUS X99-DELUXE ATX LGA2011-3 X99 Motherboard
- Intel Core I7-5930K 3.70GHZ Six Core (will likely OC to 4.2GHz or so)
- Corsair Vengeance Lpx 32GB 8X8GB DDR4 DRAM 2666MHZ
- Asus Motherboard THUNDERBOLTEX II DUAL adapter card
expansion slots:
- [slot 1] [already own] EVGA GeForce GTX Titan Black Superclocked 6GB
- [slot 2] covered by Titan
- [slot 3] [already own] EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Superclocked 3GB
- [slot 4] covered by 780
- [slot 5] EITHER [if mobo SATA hotswap works / Sonnet Allegro USB 3.0 4-Port USB3-4PM-E] OR [if mobo SATA hotswap does not work NewerTech MAXPower USB/eSATA 2x2]
- [slot 6] [already own] Blackmagic SDI
SO! In summary, any input on the following:
- case/cooling
- X99 hackintoshing
- a working USB3.0, eSATA, and hotswap internal SATA configuration
Thanks all!
