I've been doing this since 2006, maybe 2005, but hacking the tosh has always been smooth until you boot and you have to reboot for sound, for network and all the other stuff. I end up buying the native stuff from Apple anyways, and end up saving nothing because the cost of being the boss is always a bit higher than being the follower. I actually uninstalled OS X from my PC and bought Windows 8.1, and I love it. It is because like OS X, Windows is designed for the PC, it has all the drivers for the different motherboards, graphics cards and all the other s*** you may need to get your day going. I use my PC as a media computer with SLI setup, which I also got working on my Hackintosh, but still, there was so many stuff I could do in Windows at the moment, which is impossible to achieve on a Mac.

The cloud kills mostly all the file system hazards of the past, thanks for subscription models like Adobe CC. You may not copy it, or download it through your 49 dollar-a-month line, but you may pay only 9 dollars for Photoshop and Lightroom, which would probably be enough for all the artists I met in my early career, those guys who can't get a job, but may obtain 10 dollars from their family every week to do whatever.

Media and software is cheap, but hardware is the real cost at the moment, so I think Apple at the moment are pretty precise about their pricing. They put a lot of more detail in their hardware than their software. I still think Windows is the software king, not because it is the best overall system, but they are not peculiar, they have actually got plug n play to work on most of the systems.

Apples success is the understanding that people don't want compability, don't want to use their old stuff, they just want the stuff that they are selling to work, and I love it. Still, Mac is a macro interest firm, unlike Windows who support the micro interests in smaller fields who create business.

There is *nix, but too fragmented without a big company to drive it.
