I'm currently in the process of trying to install OS X to a 64gb flash drive to make sure it will boot and run on my Lenovo Ideapad Z580 (i7 3520M, 8gb (2x4gb), Intel HD4000) so I can eventually transition into swapping out my optical drive with a second HDD and install OS X to that. However, after failing to even get to the OS X installer with two different methods, I'm beginning to lose hope.

First, I tried the Unibeast method for Mountain Lion. I got my VM running and used the program to restore ML to a USB to install with. It appeared to restore successfully, but no matter what boot flags I used when it came time to install it I would always end up with a seemingly-lost display connection and my laptop screen would shut off (pure black). However, it was definitely not hanging because if I pressed a key on the keyboard, the activity led on the flash drive would flash to let me know it was being read/written.

Second, I tried using iAtkos ML3U, which is a special distro to be installed on UEFI-booting machines (most laptops that come shipped with windows 8). I got the Clover UEFI boot loader on one flash drive, and it booted just fine. Went ahead and restored the ML3U DMG to another flash drive, and it shows up in Clover just fine. I enter the same slew of boot arguments, trying to find that magical combination, but nothing works. It will load the mach_kernel, then it will "load drivers." At this point, about 5 lines of periods (".") will run down the screen, then stop abruptly. The activity led will die out on the flash drive, and I know the system has hung out to dry.

As far as I know, kexts are things that you use post-installation so that boot flags aren't needed/safe mode (-x) isn't needed. Is this true, or am I missing something that will get me to that wonderful installation screen? Thank you, let me know if there's anything else I can provide to help :)
