Currently I use a macbook air and I hook up a 4k display to it. However if I set the resolution to 4k everything is tiny. The only way to fix this is to decrease the resolution. I am considering building a hackintosh and before I invest into a 100-ish graphics card I'd like to know whether I can have a 4k display, but still be able to scale the display in such so that I can still see everything well, whilst still having a 4k resolution.

I have read apple support articles that it is possible to "adjust" you're display to a less eye-stressing scale on a mac pro(not sure if this is what the article REALLY says). My question is, if I set a hackintosh to a 4k display setting, can I scale it enough so I can see it without loosing the 4k res?
