Recently my venerable hackintosh, built around a Core i7 965 kicked the bucket. This made me sad :-(. Not really, because it gave me the excuse to build a new machine. And who doesn't like building a new computer?
I already had some bright red G.Skill memory modules, so that became the theme for the build. To match the memory, I selected a Phanteks cooler (in red, of course), and an ASRock Fatal1ty motherboard, which has red heatsinks, and a Corsair case with red LEDs in the front fan. This is a very red machine.
Installation was quite straightforward. This guide was extremely helpful. The differences between the Pro4 in the Fatal1ty are minimal, only the audio and ethernet are different. I did have to enable Legacy USB support in order to use my ultra cheap thumb drives.
I built a Clover/Yosemite installation USB stick preloaded with an appropriate configuration file and driver directory. The only hitch was that every time the installer wanted to restart the system it stalled for a very long time. And by very long time I mean 10's of minutes. At first I thought that something had gone wrong, and reset the machine to start the installation over. The next time I simply waited it out. Eventually the installation completed, with graphics and Ethernet working. All necessary kernel extensions are stored in the EFI partition, so that /System/Library/Extensions is completely vanilla. I haven't bothered with enabling the onboard audio yet, as I use external USB audio in order to use a mixer and a high-quality microphone for speech recognition. Which is what I am using to write this post.
Next up is to implement the iMessage fix, and start overclocking. I'm going to like this machine.
