So, this is about a desktop computer that was built a while back. Originally, my sister wanted to buy one for about three thousand dollars, but I convinced her to let a buddy of mine build one for her, since the (Windows PC) he built for me has worked nicely ever since.

Long story short, he looked up compatible parts, we ordered the whole thing, got it built, and loaded Mavericks onto it. It worked pretty well, barring one issue with the sound (which only functioned properly for the first day).

Then, something odd happened. Now, this is a story that I've received second hand from my sister, who isn't particularly familiar with the inner workings of a computer, but here's how I understand it. A while back, her keyboard broke, so she borrowed one I had lying around.

Well, that one worked for a little while, but when she bought a new one to replace hers, she ran into an odd problem with USB devices. Apparently, and this is according to her, mind, the neither the new keyboard, nor the mouse, nor my keyboard were working, so she simply powered the machine down with the power button.

now, it's sitting on a black screen with what looks like a clipart apple, an odd green/cyan/white wave thingie on a blue background with googly eyes in the middle, and some text in the upper left that says:

Darwin/x86 boot v5.0.132 - Chimera v2.2.1 r2248

Build date: 2013 - 09 - 27 10:40:44

16336MB memory

I plugged my old keyboard in, and hitting a key brings up a field that says "Boot:" with space for text, but I'll be honest - not only am I a PC guy, I'm really more of just a user than an aficionado for the nuts and bolts of this stuff. She's kinda freaking out and breathing down my neck about this, so any help would be much appreciated.
