Backstory (skippable):

I'm a webdev, I have a few years old MBP maxed out (+ssd) with 1680x1050 panel. It's still a great machine for my job but it's not suitable for any modern gaming. nVidia 330 M can handle very little of modern games at that resolution and at lower res it's all blurry and looks like shit.

Story:

I'm not going to give up OS X for my work. It's great and does exactly what I want. Many modern games are running on OS X just fine. Also I'm lazy to reboot back and forth all the time. On top of that having two boxes on/under my desk is more clutter than actually needed.

I think about building a hackintosh. I've build a few boxes and I know my ways around it so I don't anticipate any problems with the mechanical part. I don't have any specs yet. But there seem to be a plenty info about that so don't think I'll stuck there too.

The only thing I'm worried about is how different the user experience of Hackintosh is compared to stock hardware? Should I go with hackintosh or just build myself a separate gaming PC?

Here's what made me wonder that:

  • I've seen a few posts over here (mostly memes) about the relief of getting to the boot screen first time. In 5 years I've never had a problem installing OS X on stock hardware.
  • I've seen a few posts about problems with Messages.
  • I've seen many times concerns about OS X updates breaking stuff. That happens extremely rarely on stock hardware.

TL;DR

I want more graphics power for (occasional) gaming. Should I build a hackintosh or just a gaming PC?
