I've been considering buying a new workstation for some years now. I'm currently using a 7 year old iMac Core 2 Duo that's served me well, but I need a bit more power now.

Since the new Mac Minis came out and everyone seems disappointed with them I'm now eyeing up a £400 i5 Mac Mini from 2012 that I would upgrade to 16GB.

Ideally I would like a decent powered Windows gaming machine and OSX running my professional graphics and video editing software.

Would a Mac Mini be enough for me? Is the hassle of a hackintosh worth the effort? Am I going to need to buy an iMac to get close to the power I'm after and just use bootcamp?

I would prefer something either silent or close to silent like my iMac is now, so this may be a factor.

Has anyone got advice out there for a confused ditherer like me?
