I'm currently running:
- Asus P6T
- Intel i7 920
- Sapphire HD 6850 (ATI)
- XFX HD 4350 (ATI)
- Samsung 840 EVO SDD + 1 TB data HDD
- 18 GB RAM in some oddball config (3x2GB + 3x4GB)
- 2560x1600 + 2*1600x1200 monitors
- Windows 7 Home Pro 64bit
Usage:
- Software development (w/ some long compile / build times which are right now quite CPU-bound)
- A bit of playing World of Tanks and possibly other games, but rarely and it's not a priority
- I doubt I'll bother overclocking it
- Always on, so I care about how much heat it generates and how loud it is
- Money isn't particularly an issue, but I'd rather not pay for something I don't need / use.
My existing system performs fine but it's somewhat louder and warmer than I'd like it to be.
I am now extensively using a Mac at work and have gotten used to it, therefore I'm planning to turn over my old system to my children and build a Hackintosh as my new system.
I've been reading all the guides, but I'm quite confused in the abundance of choices, especially for MoBo & CPU selection.
I'm now thinking:
- ATX
- i7 Haswell (LGA 1150)
- Gigabyte MoBo
- Fractal Design Define R4 case
- MSI GeForce GTX 760 N760 TF 2GD5/OC 2GB GDDR5 (one card to run all 3 of my monitors I hope)
- Keep my existing SDD, possibly buy another one, and get rid of the HDD altogether (I can still access it over the network)
- Apple Wired Keyboard
- Apple Magic Mouse + IOGear Bluetooth (hoping it will work)
However, there is still a plethora of MoBo choices even with these constraints:
- Gigabyte GA-H87-D3H
- Gigabyte GA-H97-D3H
- Gigabyte GA-Z97-D3H
- Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H
- Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H
- Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD7-TH
Any advice on which MoBos would work best for my needs?
Same for CPUs:
- Intel i7-4771
- Intel i7-4770K
- Intel i7-4770S
- Intel i7-4770
- Intel i7-4790
- Intel i7-4790S
- Intel i7-4790K
Will the "S" versions run cooler than others? Or could I just theoretically under-clock the "K" version and get the same power consumption?
Any other advice on CPU selection?
