Two part question, here. I'm a little stuck on what to do.
I have a 27" iMac shell. I got it for free. I was thinking of making it into a tv/console monitor, using the innards of an old 26" LCD tv. Reasons are purely aesthetic. I work from home an an existing iMac 27" (more on that in a sec) and I like the idea of having two 'iMacs' next to each other on the desk. I can keep up with sports and stuff while I am working that way... Otherwise I just don't want to sit a 'TV' on the desk. I don't like the look of them. So I am ball busting myself here over aesthetics in my home office that is seen by my and occasionally my wife. I know, this is dumb. But that's what I am like, innit.
So yesterday I took one of the two TVs I had in mind to make this conversion apart and the LCD panel is far too large to fit inside. Depth wise. There's some sort of armouring around the panel that I can't explain. So I think I'll leave that. I can grab the other TV from my parents house today, but it's a thicker LCD tv that the one I tried yesterday, so I reckon I already know that this will also be too thick to do this with. Which has got me thinking of what I can do with this spare shell, now.
First off, how cost effective would it be, to buy individual parts and build either a new Apple specced iMac in this shell, or maybe even a hackintosh running windows. I do have a feeling that the parts apple used will be ultra specific to their iMac range, though, there's very little room inside the shell, seemingly.
If that's too much, does anyone have any suggestions on a way I could fit an LCD panel into this shell to make it a monitor/TV.
and finally; my working iMac is old now and I've recently started doing a lot more editing of video. I think it needs an overhaul. It's a late 2009 model. 3.06 Core 2Duo 4GB Ram 1TB HDD
What's the maximum I can squeeze into this thing spec wise without costing me a fortune? If I max out the RAM and get a 250/500gb SSD in place of the optical drive is that going to give me some ooompf or do I need to be thinking about graphics cards and more processing power?
