Much like the person a few threads down, I'm new to hackintoshing and I want a machine for video editing, though I also want to do some gaming in Windows. However, I want to keep mine under $1300 (ideally under $1100 with some smart Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping). Here's what I've got so far:

I went with two SSDs, 1 for OS X & 1 for Windows. I got a 3TB drive because I'm a digital packrat. I've read that an i7 is good for video editing and rendering times, so that's what I went with. To compensate, I went with a GTX 660, instead of a 680 or higher.

I have a couple of big question marks with this build:

  • Will that Blu-ray writer work? (If not, it's not too bad; it'll be the first thing to go to cut the cost if need be.)

  • I'm afraid I might need a larger power supply. PC Part Picker estimates my build at 338W, but is their estimate accurate? How much power do I really need?

  • I have a firewire drive I'd like to keep using. What do I need to do to use it still? The case also has a firewire port on the front. Is there any way to use that with this motherboard, or will it just be unusable?

Just a couple more questions (thanks for bearing with me!):

  • I'm going to be trying to pick a lot of these parts up when they go on sale, so the specific parts may change. What can I safely swap out for other things without affecting hackintosh compatibility? I know I can switch brands for the GTX 660 just fine, but are there certain SSDs to avoid with hackintoshes? Other things like that?

  • Is there anything I'll need that I've forgotten about? I would hate to get everything together and then discover I was missing something...

Thanks so much for the help I'm sure I'll see. This looks like a great community on reddit! I hope to be able to record my build process to help other newbies along in the future.
