I’ve been contemplating a new computer; while it would be used for all daily tasks, I want something that is ideally set up to edit photos and videos on an enthusiast level. Options I am considering include buying a desktop PC, building a desktop PC, building a hackintosh, or buying a Mac mini; I am open to other suggestions.
An iMac seems like too low value; a laptop component in a desktop case for a desktop price. I already have monitors I am happy with and don’t want to spend money on a glorified laptop; also there is no upgradability. A Mac Pro seems too expensive and the lack of upgradability for that kind of price makes it a deal killer for me. I considered a Linux box for a minute, even though I am not super familiar with Linux, however, there aren’t grade video editing options available for Linux. I could probably get away with Gimp for photography but the lack of good video editing software is also a dealbreaker.
I’m not familiar with OS X and have never gotten comfortable in the environment but it seems as though most professional photographers and videographers use a Mac environment to do their editing. I, personally, am way more comfortable in Windows, but as they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. With that in mind I’m thinking about taking the plunge and building my 1st Macintosh and my 1st PC; I am the “guy who’s good with computers” in my family and have done many basic upgrades (RAM, video card, hard drive, etc.) but never actually built a PC from top to bottom. Not sure I want to delve into a Hackintosh; that’s why I’m here.
My budget would be between $800 and $1200.
What you all suggest?
