Hello everybody, I already posted this prospective build in /r/buildapc but thought I should ask here as well. After years of working solely with my Macbook Pro I'd really like a workstation again, and since I like to do a little gaming as well, I can't really justify dropping for Mac Pro (plus building my own should be fun, right?).
The rig will be used for 3D rendering (mainly CPU-based but I want to explore GPU-based rendering too, hence the Titan Black) and development on OS X (so parts need to be Hackintosh-compatible), and a little gaming on Windows. I also want to triple-boot Linux for some dev stuff there too.
I want to build something that's going to last me for a while, so I'm willing to spend a little more to get near the top end. I want to overclock the CPU, and leave room for a second GPU in a couple of years perhaps.
Here's the parts list I'm looking at currently after doing some research: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks
My main questions are:
1) The storage configuration I want is: 1 SSD for Windows/Linux, 2x SSD RAID0 for OS X, 2x HDD RAID1 for storage. Will I need a separate RAID controller for that? Is there a better mobo I should look at for this setup? Is this even possible in a hack pro?
2) I love the look of the R4 case, but I'm concerned about having enough room for everything. Is it going to be cool enough to overclock? Or should I go for a bigger case (say the Corsair 750D) and get a beefier cooler (H100i perhaps)?
3) With the new X99 chipset and Haswell-e looming on the horizon, do you think the CPU/mobo combination I've got will get cheaper at any point in the next few months? (I'm not interested in being on the bleeding edge particularly)
This will be my first build so I'm open to any and all suggestions!
