So I experimented briefly with hackintoshes about 10 years ago, and with mostly dismal results- I attempted to get OS X Leopard running on a cheap Lenovo laptop, and spent hours upon hours, ultimately not getting things like the GPU or wireless card to function properly.

Anyway, shortly after that failed experiment I gave in and purchased a MacBook Pro, and have been using Macs ever since. However, I've recently been trying to determine what machine to upgrade to. I have my eye on the new Mac Pro, but it's extremely expensive in the configuration I want.

So basically my question is, is it currently possible for me to build a desktop hackintosh that will work reliably with relatively little maintenance required? Everything really needs to be rock solid as I depend on my computer entirely for all the work I do (user interface design and software development). How do OS upgrades work? Does everything break with every point release, forcing me to wait for a new 'hacked' version each time (similar to iOS jailbreaking)? Can I actually build a hackintosh with equivalent processing power to the Mac Pro for a significantly cheaper cost to make it worth the time and effort?

Thanks for any info!
