Hi everyone,
I'm a student in audio engineering and I am looking at a future potential build (funds allowing), this computer would be my main workhorse for recording and mixing. I am completely new to building PCs but I learn quickly and I'm fairly well versed with software/GUI side, and have installed Operating Systems before. Although I want to save as much money as I can, I'd rather get it right the first time than purchase lesser materials and then be forced to upgrade later. Here are the things that I want:
- Maximized processing power vs cost benefit
- Ability to upgrade
- Reliability
- Dual boot (Windows/OSX)
- Dual monitor support
Software used:
- Pro Tools 11
- Ableton Live
- Multiple instances of VSTs, and other audio effects
- Photoshop
To the best of my knowledge (of which amasses only 2-3 hours of research), it looks like I have addressed the issues above.
- CPU - appears to be the best non-OC'd recommended by tonymac
- Motherboard - 32GB RAM capacity, 2 HDMI ports, several Hard Drive ports (confirmation?)
- RAM - 16GB (would suffice for now) recommended by tonymac
- Hard Drive - 2 SSD system drives (as recommend by tonymac), 1 HDD storage drive
- Case - Cheapest one I could find that I liked
And I have a few questions as well:
- These parts were all selected by following the CustoMac Buyer's Guide product list, are these the only products that are compatible? If not, how can I verify whether a piece will work?
- Cooler - Is one necessary? I've read in other posts that a cooler won't be necessary with a non-OC'd CPU. If one is necessary, I am working audio and would need something as quiet as possible.
- Two system drives - benefit / cost? Some suggest that booting your OSs from separate drives is preferred. I know that this isn't necessary, but is the stability/reliability worth the added cost of an additional drive?
- Mobo and Harddrives - Are there enough ports to connect three (and potentially) more harddrives?
- Is a graphics card necessary?
- PSU - What wattage will I need/want?
- Monitors (screens) - what brands and/or products would you suggest in a budget range? I would be using my 32" TV until I worked up the funds for a dual monitor setup.
- Case - I wasn't sure what size tower I would need, so I went with a Full Size. I like this model because it's a no-frills design, if anyone is aware of a cheaper product in the same vein I would appreciate the heads up.
Unfortunately, I'm on a pretty strict budget and this build is far from happening at this point; however, I'd like to plan ahead and learn as much as I can before I take the plunge. Like I said above, I am completely new to building PC's so any direction is greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long-winded post, and thank you in advance to everyone for any and all help, information or criticism!
