I have a hackintosh with mountain lion but need to run FCP X 10.1.4. My plan is to just run yosemite on an external HD with FCPX and only use it for that. I loaded yosemite onto the external HD using DiskMaker X. When I go to boot to that drive the apple logo flashes and the computer reboots. I've tried just making the boot drive with disk utility as well as just installing yosemite to that drive and neither yielded any results whatsoever. The computer didn't even recognize it as a bootable drive.
I have:
3.49 GHz Intel Core i7
GeForce GTX 560 1024 MB
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM
Gigabyte h77-ds3h board
