Built my Hackintosh in 2011 or 2012 and put 10.7.2 on it. Due to all the warnings about difficulty in updating, I have avoided it for as long as possible.

However, I want to install XCode for something and that requires 10.10, and I am more frequently running into situations such as newer apps that I can't use at all, plus Safari (hey, I like Safari) is so ancient that it doesn't even display some newer websites properly.

  1. Is there a one-stop handholding guide to performing an update of this big a jump on tonymac or somewhere? I have done some searching but nothing I feel excited about and it would be great to have a recommendation.

  2. Backups. I have a Time Machine backup on an external. Is this an adequate backup? As in, if I feel the need to totally wipe my internal HD and just start fresh, does my Time Machine backup suffice to put back any files I want afterwards? (I do use Google Drive and Dropbox for backups, but they could still be missing stuff as I do some photo editing and don't do all cloud with it because file sizes.)

  3. What am I forgetting? I often use this question when about to leave for a trip, and it seems useful here too: What have I completely overlooked that you will be excited to remind or inform me of?

  4. Which version of 10.10 is the current recommended one?
