I've been running hackintoshes since OS X Lion. My current system runs everything I need quite well except when it comes to simply playing or editing 4K video. I've been working with 4K video files in MP4 or MOV formats from a DJI Phantom quadcopter and I cannot get the video to play smoothly. 1080P plays and edits perfectly.

My system is comprised of the following components;

  • Intel Core i7-960 (1dt gen i7)
  • 24GB Ram
  • ATI HD-5770 graphics card
  • main SSD: Samsung EVO PRO 850 500GB
  • media drive: Western Digital Black 1TB

4K video plays somewhat smoother but not perfect in VLC. OS X Preview and Quicktime are unusable. In order to edit in FCP X I need to create optimized media, essentially duplicating the files.

Do I need to upgrade my CPU, MB & memory in order to playback and edit these higher bandwidth files? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
