I built my mac 3 or 4 years ago and it's generally been quite worth it. No major problems (except finicky USB3 and missing hibernation, but whatever).
I have a wireless mobile router (Wi-Fi WALKER WiMAX 2+ NAD11, pos btw) which I can connect to wirelessly or over USB.
I sometimes dualboot Ubuntu and in that case the connection speed over USB blows that of the wifi out of the water... so that's what I use. Also, then I can share my internet over wifi, which is nice for sharing the chromecast!
I'm booted into the Mac right now, connected over wifi+squid proxy+US vpn, and speedtest.net says I have about 200ms ping, 12Mbs down & 1.5Mbs up. With the VPN and everything off it's a bit faster, but no Pandora :(
Unlike with Ubuntu, if I connect to the wireless router with USB speedtest.net says about 300-1000ms ping, .5Mbs down, 1Mbs up... if I'm lucky. (direct connection)
Does anyone have experience with ethernet over USB? Does it just not internet good? Anyway, thanks in advance for any pointers!
(as a side note, this is a fresh install because I just replaced a dying drive, latest multibeast, no clover cuz lazy, everything just werks... but this)
