I am an iOS developer/moonlight computer scientist still in school. I work on many objective c projects at the same time, as well as research in parallel and distributed programming. I make an absurd amount of money for a college student. A mac pro simply can't match the specifications I need. I have a very expensive company macbook pro, but I'd like something with a good bit more graphical power, a la GeForce GTX 980 or greater. In addition, I do lots of workstation virtualization. I normally use a separate machine with linux + kvm for these tasks, but it'd be great to consolidate it on to one machine with VMware Fusion, as it has more power to leverage graphical resources. I'd like to have huge amounts of ECC RAM, probably in the range of > 64 GB. Is there a well supported Xeon workstation chipset/ CPU combo? Should I just buy a Mac pro and have a big ass Dell workstation next to it?
