Made bootable copy of boot-drive. Can I boot into it from a different computer (Mac or PC)?

I have tried to boot into it from my girlfriend's macbook pro by restarting, holding option and selecting it, but I just get a (/) symbol http://i.stack.imgur.com/y8ULs.jpg

Any way to get this working on other computers?

I have installed chimera on the bootable external drive. It is Mountain Lion 10.8.2
