Ever since I built my Hackintosh I have been told that the best defence against messing things up is to clone the HD.

It has always been my intention to install a fresh copy of OS X, then clone it so as I move forward to experiment/ install programs , I have a fresh copy to fall back on.

The problem is, whenever I've tried this, it has resulted in disaster.

First, what often happens is that I have not idea what setting so pick. I just go wi the default and hope for the best.

Second, more times than not it will error leaving me with a non-cloned drive.

The worst issue though is that every time I've tried to clone the drive, it messes with permissions which basically wrecks a perfectly good install.

The day before yesterday in preparation for El Capitan, I used a recommended clone software. The result was the permissions were so messed up I could start mail, photoshop, and about 8 other programs. The Nvidia drivers would no longer load and my iCloud stopped verifying iMessage.

I had to set all permissions to read/write in bulk to get things working, but ended up scrapping the entire install, which was working perfectly.

The sad thing is, even if I were to get a clone, I have no idea what to do with it. If I want to restore a blank drive, what do I even do?

Needless to say, I have had no luck with cloning. I have a fresh install of El Capitan which I would love to clone, but if it messes up everything I wont be happy.

Anyone have any advice?
