First time cracking open a Mac laptop, so I want some advice/lessons learned.
For my girlfriend and my anniversary, we decided to make something for each other, so I'm border line cheating by buying an SSD to install in her Macbook to speed it up (she always complains how slow it is and wants to use it for grad school). I can post specs of the laptop if needed, I think it runs Mountain Lion OS. I've built a PC, so I know my way around computers, but I don't know the particulars of this process so I'm hoping for some advice!
My current plan: 1. Backup all her files on an external hard drive by copying the files. Is there an easy way to make a HD image that I can copy and then unpack to the SSD? (I do this occasionally at work for our PC's, but the software I use is expensive and only Windows compatible).
- Open up the laptop, remove hard drive, replace with SSD (I'm guessing the hard drive will use the standard SATA cable and I can use this same cable for my SSD).
3.Burn Mac OS on a CD from my desktop, install on laptop (does it necessarily have to be the same version OS that was on the Mac before swapping drives?).
Copy (in file form or hopefully in image form) all files from external to SSD.
Put Macbook back and hope girlfriend notices speed boost :)
For anyone who has successfully done a similar thing, are there any brands I should avoid or size requirements I'll need to keep in mind? I was thinking a Samsung EVO 240 GB, that's what I have for my desktop and have been very happy with it's performance thus far.
Thanks for the help!
