I recently got the Dell 5k monitor (UP2715k) and a GTX 960. After two days of fiddling with kext patches and SMBIOS settings I have found the (almost perfect) solution. OSX recognizes the Dell 5k monitor with its full resolution and applies the retina setting.

What I have done:

  • changed SMBIOS to iMac15,1 - I know this is not recommended, but the only options to get 5k to work is iMac15,1 / MacPro6,1 / MacbookPro Retina 11,2. All other SMBIOS options won't support 5k, "only" 4k resolution max

  • accidentally with only these model settings, OSX will boot into a black screen. So I applied Method 1 and 2 described under Problem 4: http://ift.tt/2760yqz (Patching AppleGraphicsDevicePolicy.kext)

So far, so good.

The last problem is that OSX now only boots when the monitor is off (=no power supply). If the monitor is on, OSX gets into a bootloop. I'm booting in verbose mode, but there's no kernel panic or error visible. It just reboots before the login screen is shown.

The same problem occurs also with MacPro6,1 and MacbookPro 11,2 settings.

So what I have to do for now:

  • cut power supply of monitor
  • boot OSX
  • power monitor on

Here's my clover config:

Does anybody have a suggestion for booting OSX normally with the monitor powered on?
