I have posted this also at tonymacx86 just now. But also asking here. I just don't know anymore why and what...
I am currently trying to resolve some strange problems a friend encountered when building his hackintosh.
Hardware:
- Intel Core i7-4770K
- Gigabyte GA-Z87X-OC
- Pny Geforece GTX 760
- Samsung SSD 840 EVO
- 16GB Ram
A other friend helped him put it together (more or less) I had to do the last steps and then installed 10.9.1 for him. Everything worked fine and I left him with it. The next day he called me and reported strange boot behavior, he explained that the computer would only boot every second try. The first try it would basically freeze up before you could get into bios. It would just display a _ or... .
I figured it might be something with the build but did not have time to help him. A few days later he again called and said it aint doing nothing anymore. Black screen, no boot no nothing. Screen not getting any signal. He was working on something when the computer froze and then it wouldnt boot anymore.
So I got over there and looked at it. I tried reseting the BIOS. Nothing, I removed extra ram, tried both alone, tried different sockets. Nothing. The strangest part is that the onboard LED says A6 most of the time. I then took out the graphics card and noticed that a loose screw fell out from somewhere. I figured it might have been lying around on the graphics card and messed it up. After putting the card back in the computer booted normal again. I restored the BIOS put the settings back to how they should be. (Disabled onboard graphics). Also the strange only successful on second try disappeared. Onboard LED says A0 and OSX boots perfectly.
Once more, I left and he was happy again. But guess what... it didn't last very long. A few days later he called again and told me it's back to black screen. So I took a HDMI cable, plus some old geforce 8600 (I think it was a 8600) and headed over. Tried resetting BIOS again graphicscard out and back in, checked all connections. All seemed fine. The onboard LED even said A0 which it says when it booted up fine.
I tried connecting the TV with the HDMI cable, but no signal. I checked all connections, disconnected everything but cpu and put it back in. Nothing. Screen stays black but onboard says A0 So I took my old geforce card put it in and guess what... it works. So I figured his graphics card is broken.
To make sure I take it home to my computer, put it in and .... it works.
Now I really don't know what and why it is like that. But I only tried booting with his card 4 times and then I took it out again, but it works for me.
At the second boot tho my screen said something like this: "The current input timing is not supported by the monitor display. Please change your input timing to 1920x1080@60hz or any other monitor listed timing as per the monitor specifications." But that went away after an other restart.
So do you have any ideas what it could be. I am really not sure how and what could cause the strange behavior. It all started when he said it would only boot every second try, from there on it just got worse. I did not try the onboard grahpics yet, not sure if that even works. I did try with HDMI cable and with a DVI cable. Both did not work.
Any help would be great. Thanks
