I've got a Mac Pro 1,1 that I've been using for about 7 years now. It's still working fine, but it's severely limiting for my video editing needs (SATA II, slow graphics card—Radeon 5770, and the 2x2.66 dual core xeon doesn't crunch numbers as fast as some of the new laptops for transcoding purposes).

I'd love to get something new to dual boot for gaming, and also to work with video (I shoot and edit professionally). Unfortunately, as much as I lust after the new Mac Pro, it's just not affordable.

So I'm looking for a cheap build ($500-700) that I can have fun gaming with but also use as a testing-the-waters rig for a hackintosh. In 2009 I had a hackintosh Netbook and it was absolutely frustrating to work with. I'd like to know if A) $500-700 in gear will blow my current Mac Pro out of the water and B) if the hackintosh builds have gotten stable enough to possibly be a work computer for video editing/color correction/general transcoding/etc.

I punched in a build from Tony X86 into PCPartPicker, but it still seems kind of high to me: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/31FIh

Does a mini case increase price, or decrease it? Footprint doesn't matter to me (I thought the case was cool, but it could be 4 feet tall for all I care, as long as it's cheap and reliable). Anyway, thanks!
