I've seen many people post here saying that their system is screwed because the system auto-updated their OS X from the App Store and they are forced to re-install from scratch. I applied a simple 1-minute "fix" to my system which can prevent hours of frustration later on. Simply follow these steps:
Open System Preferences->Open App Store Preferences->Uncheck the box labeled "Install system data files and security updates". The rest are up to you. So for example, it should look like this.
