I have a hackintosh(Yosemite 10.10.5) running on an Asus K55V laptop (i7, 8gb RAM). Recently I have been getting the 'The Spinning Beach Ball of Death' when performing some disk intensive tasks like below

  1. Opening IntelliJ Idea - at one point during startup it does a "Scanning files to index" which is when I get the SBBOD. It eventually completes if I leave it for 40+ mins ( actually it shouldn't take more than 2mins! )

  2. Updating Firefox!

Otherwise everything works normally, didn't see any problem when using Xcode.

How do I troubleshoot this? Where should I start looking?
