So my understanding is power conditioning is generally not very necessary since any DC transformer will handle this well enough in countries with a stable AC grid.

But surge protection for let's say a Hackintosh w/a 650W power supply and also simple devices like a USB phone charger AC-> 5VDC.

I noticed the other day that the strip I was connected to had a flickering light, at times and the transformer (the charger) was running very hot. Then my phone stopped charging. I'm assuming there was a thermal overload and someone designed the circuit to break in that instance. Am I correct but more importantly, how important is a quality surge protector in protecting your gear.

When I turn off my desk fan for instance which is connected to the same strip (NOT the strip I mentioned before) as my PC, I can "hear it turn off" through my headphones if you know what I mean.
