Ok, so I am no longer getting the still waiting for root device issue, however I am now getting the following situation:
Booting with just -v, npci=0x2000 and kext-dev-mode=1 I get this: http://ift.tt/1QB9Pl6
and with cpus=1 added I get the following: http://ift.tt/1Q9Aik3
In both cases the machine restarts a second or two after the stages pictured.
Of course Insanelymac and tonymacx86 have been of no help (it appears that my thread was outright deleted from the former) so I thought posting here might continue to be more productive.
