Hi I'm looking to build a computer for my Dad. He's a long time mac user so I thought building him a mac would be a great idea and save him a lot of money. I built my own PC so I have some experience, but I did have a lot of help from a friend so any advice and tips would be most appreciated. He wants the computer for photo (very basic nothing like photoshop) and possibly video editing (final cut pro) as well as basic streaming, browsing, word processing etc.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
- $1000, but can be lower if it is excessive for what he needs.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
- Within a week or two, but being out of date isn't a problem.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget?
- Tower and tower components. However, because $1000 is possibly(?) excessive for his needs it would be great to have some money leftover to go towards a monitor.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
- I live in Adelaide, Australia and will be using a local company called MSY. They generally have most parts on PC part picker.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
- Not re-using any parts.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
- I don't plan on overclocking.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
- An SSD drive for the OS and a 1-2TB HDD for photo and movie storage.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
- No preference
Do you need a copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference for one or the other?
- I was hoping to just be able to build and run the computer without needing Windows involved at all. Like I said I'm very new to this so I'm not sure if this is possible?
Thank you to anyone who can help me out. I wasn't sure if this sort of post was allowed but saw a couple like this which received some very helpful responses. I'd also greatly appreciate and tips and guide to this build (or even being pointed in the right direction).
