Any of you had any luck getting this GPU working with OS X El Cap?

I am a total newb at all this, so bear with me if I have any dumb questions or need clarification on certain vocab.

Anyway, this is my setup:

Motherboard: MSI p67a-g45

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K (it has Intel HD 3000 as a crutch for the next issue)

GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB

And 8GB DDR3 RAM (I don't remember the make/model at the moment but doesn't really matter I don't think)

I'm sure my CPU will be fine as I've heard Intel chips are a breeze with OS X. My motherboard I'm assuming is okay (can anyone confirm??) but my GPU.. I have read that that has issues with OS X. Can someone add any input on this, give me advice on what to do, etc?

I really may end up upgrading my GPU as she's definitely not up to par these days. Would a GTX 970 be a good choice? I know it works well with OS X, but I am just not sure if it would be dumb to get a GPU that is getting replaced by the 1070. I just don't want to replace an problematic GPU with another problematic GPU as I have heard both the GTX 1070 and 1080 do not work with OS X.
