After thinking about it for the last couple of weeks and yesterdays deprecation of my early 2009 iMac, I think I'm ready to build a Hackintosh and gaming pc. My setup would than be a rMBP + Hackintosh, which seems like the sweet spot.
My planned build currently looks like this: http://ift.tt/21jL4KR
But it's still ever-changing. I might upgrade to an i7. The GTX 1070 will be bought later, if the prices drop a bit. Otherwise I will buy a cheap GTX 970/980. Because the 1070 does not currently work with a Hackintosh, I would use the iGPU in macOS and the 1070 in Windows.
But I digress. The reason of this post is the following. I think I've found everything the works, doesn't work or can be a bit tricky with a Hackintosh and now want to check in with the community if I've missed anything major.
What works:
- Apple Music: Seems to be working, albeit there were some problems (Beats One).
- Intel HD530: Works as of 10.11.4
- Non DRM HTML5 video
- Other iCloud Services
- Safari bookmarks and tabs sync
- Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Contacts sync
- Drive, Photos, Keychain, Back to My Mac
What can work/has a workaround:
- Audio: Generally a bit wonky but can work. Probably easier to buy a USB soundcard.
- Netflix, more generally HTML5 Encrypted Media Extension
- Does not work
- Workaround: Use Silverlight/Chrome and accept the worse quality.
- iMessage & FaceTime: Not out of the box but can be made working.
- Sleep: Seems to be hit or miss?
- Multiple Monitors
- Works with dedicated Card?
- iGPU seems to be a bit problematic
- Continuity & Handoff: Works, but needs extra hardware.
- Little Snitch: Seems to be working, but kexts can be a problem?
What does not work:
- iTunes movies & music videos
- File Vault 2
- Does not work on whole boot drive
- Alternative (I think): Split drive into OS and data partition. Encrypt only the data partition.
