Yay! So, my motherboard has an ALC887 sound card. It does have S/PDIF connectors on the motherboard, but there are no output connectors.

First step: buy an expansion bracket (for cheap, in China) and hook it up properly. It's just two wires for coaxial and three for optical.

Next issue, the MultiBeast realtec 887 does not support S/PDIF out. It will show there's digital output, but it will not work. Next steps, in order:

  1. Remove /Library/Extensions/realtec887.kext
  2. Install VooDooHDA 2.8.8
  3. Reboot

Next, simply select the S/PDIF output and off you go.

By default this gives 16bit / 44.1kHz (CD quality) digital output. This is fine for most people, but why not crank it up, like all the way? Open "Audio MIDI Setup" and for the S/PDIF select 192kHz and 2 channel 24 bit. Done!

Enjoy that music.
